MADISON, Ill. – Approaching the halfway point of the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) season, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) and his AM Racing team are encouraged by the direction of their team heading into Saturday night’s CarShield 200 presented by CK Power.
With the leadership of crew chief Eddie Troconis, the Mooresville, N.C.-based team has steadily proven they have fast Chevrolet Silverados and while obstacles have certainly hindered the team at times during the season, Gateway provides the opportunity for the team to collectively earn their second top-10 finish of the season.
“Gateway is a very unique race track with two different corners almost like a road course,” said Austin Wayne Self. “The hot conditions during the day and cool nights make the perfect setup hard to find but I look forward to getting to the track this weekend, finding some speed and having a good finish.”
Self, 23, has two prior starts at the 1.25-mile track just outside St. Louis. After experiencing hardship during his Gateway debut in 2016, he rebounded last year with a solid 16th place finish after starting 25th.
This weekend, Self believes he has the equipment to deliver his sixth-career top-10 finish.
“Eddie and I have done a lot of talking and I feel like we have a good baseline on where we want to be for practice and how we want to start the race,” Self added. “It’s going to be a game of strategy while also making sure our truck is handling pretty good where you can carry the momentum to make passes at both ends of the race track.
The track is wide enough in some places where passing can be easy, in others, it’s small enough where it can get you in trouble. That provides good racing though for the fans.”
For Gateway, AM Racing welcomes back Texas-based Flying Circle as the co-primary partner for Saturday night’s 160-lap slugfest.
