DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.: The offseason is over, and the start of the 2020 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series season is here.
For driver Austin Wayne Self and his AM Racing team, the duo heads to Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway this week looking to start the new season off on the right foot and collect back-to-back top-10 finishes at the “World Center of Racing.”
“The offseason went pretty quick, but I’m ready to get back to the track and get after it,” said Self.
“It’s a been a busy couple months with the big shop move and working hard to better our program for the season. A good finish at Daytona on Friday night would be a great reward for everyone’s efforts.”
The Austin, Texas native will make his fifth start at the 2.5-mile superspeedway on Friday night and statistically speaking, it’s the home of his career-best finish in Truck Series competition.
In 2017, Self-guided his truck through a massive last-lap accident that propelled him to finish second. Two years later, he returned to the top-10 with a solid ninth-place result last February.
This weekend though, Self believes he has a truck that could win the race.
“Our superspeedway program was very strong last year,” added Self. “Of course, a lot of things have to go your way to get to the checkered flag, but a fast truck certainly helps. My crew chief Eddie (Troconis) has a niche for this type of racing and he works super hard to make sure we have what it takes when it comes to superspeedway racing.
“I enjoy the intensity and strategy of this type of racing and I think I’ve been able to show that over the years. Daytona has been accustomed to producing first-time winners in the past and I’d like to add my name to that list.”
For the series’ first of two trips to Florida this season, AM Technical Solutions will serve alongside GO TEXAN as a major associate partner for Friday night’s race.
Don’t mess with Texas, CForce Bottling Company, Flying Circle, Kreuz Market, and United Sorghum Checkoff Program will serve as associate partners in the first race of the year.
In 84 NGROTS races, the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year has two top-fives (second at Daytona 2017, fifth at Michigan 2019) and seven top-10 finishes. The Texan maintains an average finish of 18.0 during his four years of competition.
