BRISTOL, Tenn: Capturing a strong and season-high fifth-place finish this past weekend at Michigan International Speedway, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) and his AM Racing team hope to carry the momentum and deliver another strong performance in Thursday night’s UNOH 200 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
The recent upswing in performance of the Mooresville, N.C.-based team, including two top-six finishes in the last four races is certainly turning heads but for Austin, Texas native Self, he knows their recent performance is hopefully a taste of what’s to come.
“Things are really good at AM Racing right now,” said Self who earned his second career top-five finish at Michigan. “The AM Racing guys have worked hard all year long and we’re being rewarded now with some strong finishes. We’re not done though. We want to keep going and keep getting better.”
Self credits his crew chief Eddie Troconis for his motivation and his determination to succeed with the hopes of making AM Racing winners before the end of the season.
“I know we’re at the beginning of the Playoffs, but we can win,” offered Self. “We are getting there. With our finishes at Kentucky and Michigan and our performances at Pocono and Eldora, I think we’ve risen our team a notch.
“We can’t be too complacent though. We have to keep working hard and not settle for what we’re doing. Yes, we are running good and I’m comfortable with the trucks, but we have to get better.
“As long as we keep taking steps in the right direction, we’re going to end our season on a high note.”
The 23-year-old will make his fourth career start at Bristol Motor Speedway and looks to improve on his 13th place finish at the 0.533-mile short track from last August.
“I love Bristol,” Self said with a smile. “It’s short track racing at its finest. It’s a fast place where things happen in a hurry, so you have to be on your toes.
“Momentum is key at Bristol and track position is critical too. We just need to unload strong and keep fine-tuning our No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado and see if we can’t get ourselves another top-10 finish on Thursday night.”
Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 78th career Truck Series start.

In 77 NGOTS races, the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year has two top-fives (second at Daytona 2017, fifth at Michigan 2019) and seven top-10 finishes. The Texan maintains an average finish of 17.9 during his three years of competition.
The Austin, Texas native is nestled 13th in the championship standings with seven races remaining.

The UNOH 200 (200 laps | 100.6 miles) is the 17th of 23 races on the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series schedule. Practice begins on Thurs., Aug. 15 from 9:05 a.m. – 9:55 a.m., while final practice is set for 11:05 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. Qualifying races are set for later in the day beginning at 4:35 p.m. The 32-truck field will take the green flag shortly after 8:30 p.m. with live coverage on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), the Motor Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Satellite Radio, Channel 90). All times are local (Eastern).
